Our Industry

Pennsylvania's independents produce oil and gas in 31 of the state's 67 counties. Most of the crude oil is produced in the counties of McKean, Warren, Forest and Venango, although production also occurs in the counties between Butler and Greene. Natural gas is produced in all 31 counties. In 2006, a record 4,931 oil and gas wells were drilled in Pennsylvania.

Natural gas
Pennsylvania's natural gas producers operate some 50,000 wells to deliver over 158 billion cubic feet of gas to the market. Pennsylvania independents produce enough natural gas to satisfy approximately 25 percent of state's annual demand. Pennsylvania consumes more than 660 billion cubic feet of natural gas every year.

Pennsylvania has an estimated 2.8 trillion cubic feet of proved natural gas reserves in the ground awaiting development.

In 2006, Pennsylvania natural gas producers drilled approximately 3,900 new wells in the state.

Coalbed methane
Pennsylvania producers are also involved in developing coalbed methane resources in the state. Coalbed methane, the natural gas from underground coal seams, is an emerging energy source that rivals conventional natural gas in composition and heating value. Coalbed methane is commonly used like other natural gas supplies for domestic, commercial and industrial fuel.

Pennsylvania has roughly 900 billion cubic feet of estimated coalbed methane reserves.

In 2006, Pennsylvania producers drilled 60 coalbed methane wells.

Crude Oil
Pennsylvania oil producers operate more than 17,000 wells to produces more than 3.5 million barrels of Pennsylvania Grade crude oil each year. Penn Grade Crude is a superior quality, paraffin-based crude oil that is refined primarily into lubricating base stocks. Lubricants made from Pennsylvania Grade crude oil have been the choice of equipment manufacturers and consumers more than 100 years.

Pennsylvania currently has approximately 14 million barrels of proved crude oil reserves remaining to be produced.

In 2006, Pennsylvania oil producers drilled approximately 1,050 new oil wells.
